From today, UK laws based on the EU’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive will force websites to obtain users’ consent in order to store cookies. Cookies are small text files that record user activity on websites.

Website operators have an extra year’s ‘grace period’ to change the way they use cookies to comply with new laws, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has said.
